Kmart is in the tank at the moment, and desperate to claw back from bankruptcy. It’s at desperate times like this that just what they need is a story about how they’ve pulled from the shelves a tabloid with an unflattering Martha Stewart story. Stewart sponsors a line of products sold at Kmart (and it’s not a bad line of products, to be sure).

So one of two things is going on here:

First, it may be that Kmart is so afraid of patrons being turned off of the Martha that they’re trying damage control by not carrying this week’s issue of the Globe. Which is dumb, since most folks I know who pick up such things would be more torqued at being unable to to find their weekly fix than they would be at seeing a story about a Martha Stewart biography which doesn’t paint her in a good light.

(Indeed, anyone who reads tabloids knows that the Martha isn’t a model mother, employer, or business partner. Heck, you just have to watch her show to get the feeling that there’s more going on below that iron-bound composure than seems obvious.)

The second possibility is that the Martha herself made the “request” that Kmart not carry the tabloid. Which is stupid on her part because it doesn’t make things any better when stories like this run. And while it may keep the Martha happy, it’s gotta be costing Kmart further money.

Ego and fear — just the sort of thing to lead folks into making mistakes.
