I’ve tweaked my templates a bit, so that adding a comment takes you to the Individual Archive for that post (which has the comment fields), rather than opening a special pop-up window (which was causing some people some grief, not to mention being wasteful).

That means the little comment icon () functions pretty much the same as the link icon (), except that it drops you down to the comment section of the archive.

This seems to me to be a bit more intuitive, but let me know what you think.

You like?

  1. Personal Opinion: When I see there are comments for a particular entry, I look to read them, so I tend to hit the comment button because that’s where the indication is. (Please don’t parse that sentence.) Since the link button doesn’t indicate whether someone has commented, that doesn’t seem the logical choice for me. That’s my perspective, as our local TV station says after its editorials

  2. Oh, I plan on keeping both buttons there (just for that reason). I’m more wondering whether anyone has any cold-pricklies about the Individual Archive window for a post rather than the little comment pop-up.

  3. I gave into the pop-up world, even though I don’t like it myself.

Me, I’d make the link go to the comments, but not open a new window. But I’m very used to opening new window when I want them, thankyouverymuch!

  4. I like them opening in a new window because that’s how I like to navigate it, leaving the source window open so that it doesn’t get inadvertently deleted. All my links on the left (or as many as I have control of) also open a new window. I’m just a new-window-opening fool!

It’s different from the pop-up, though, because it’s a full-sized window, and it’s the actual archive file, not an ad hoc CGI generated window. And I like the look of it better.

  5. I guess that is a little confusing. I’ll make a note to make it clearer. (If you hover over the little clock, it says “Mountain Time,” but that’s not exactly the most transparent interface.)

  6. I think it’s more the commas. I’m used to a year after Fri, 24 May, 2002. Not the time in four-digit notation without any reference.

And the Mountain Time doesn’t reveal itself on IE for the Mac. But that’s not surprising.
