It’s time once again for the Thursday Thumb-Twiddler — proof once again that not only can I answer the tough questions, but I can ask ’em, too.

1. If you had the knowledge, would you inform your mate (or a parent) that they have an incurable disease? Or would you try to keep the truth from them (assume they are in full command of their faculties) for as long as possible?

I’d like to think that I could be as honest and fully disclosing as I would want others to be to me. I know that few things are as distressing to me as having expectations radically altered. I’d rather have as much time as possible with the correct expectations as wait until the last moment to learn, oops, I guess we won’t be going on that vacation next summer …

If I feel that way, I’m morally obliged to do the same for others.

Now if the question were, when would I tell my mate/parents about a terminal illness I had … well (cough, cough) that wasn’t the question asked …

2. If you had a choice of one intimate “soulmate” and no other close friends, or of no such soulmates and many friends and acquaintances, which would you choose?

My life has tended toward small groups of friends. I can imagine having nobody but Margie in my life; I can’t imagine having everyone but her.

3. Which sport would you most like to play professionally?

Golf. Good exercise without the usual panoply of career-ending-crunches that drive most folks out of competitive play after three or four years. Hell, there’s plenty of folks on the senior tour and beyond who seem to have a fine time at it (aside from the Perpetual Frustration of the sport).
