Children’s Books

This week, on This-or-That Tuesday….

This week, on This-or-That Tuesday.

1. Dr. Seuss characters: the Cat in the Hat or the Grinch?

The Grinch. Loved the old TV special (with Boris Karloff doing the narration and some wonderful deep-voiced guy singing the incomparable “Mr. Grinch” song). Cat in the Hat was always a bit anarchic for me.

2. “Anne of Green Gables” or “Little Women”?

Never read either as a child. Played in a HS production of Little Women in high school (Laurie, in case you’re interested). Loved the Anne TV series, and read a few of those books, later in college. Given a choice, I’d offer Katherine Anne.

3. Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys?

Hardy Boys rocked.

4. Winnie the Pooh characters: Tigger or Eeyore?

Being an Eeyore personality at times, I should choose that, but Tigger has more fun.

5. Which author: Judy Blume or Beverly Cleary?

Never much cared for Blume. Cleary’s Ramona (et al.) books were faboo.

6. Roald Dahl books: “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” (Willy Wonka) or “James & the Giant Peach”?

Peach was a hidden treasure, until they made the movie. But my heart belongs to Wonka. I knew a lot of the Oompah-Loompah songs by heart, too.

7. “Harry Potter” or “The Wizard of Oz”?

Get real. Oz.

8. Curious George or Madeline?

Never had any exposure to Madeline until I started watching the Disney Channel. On the other hand, I seriously told my Mom once that I wanted to be named George.

9. “A Wrinkle in Time” or “Little House on the Prairie”?

L’Engle rocks. I like the Wilder books, don’t get me wrong, but A Wrinkle in Time is just fabulous. (And her other books are pretty damned good, too.)

10. Dr. Seuss again: “Horton Hears a Who” or “The Lorax”?

The Lorax? Bah. Environmentalist twaddle. Horton, on the other hand, was most excellent, teaching fine lessons of commitment, honor, faith and trust.
