… Fear our lawyers.
In a civil lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, relatives of hundreds killed in the attacks and some Sept. 11 survivors accused seven international banks operating mainly in the Middle East, eight Islamic foundations and charities, the government of Sudan and a number of individuals of helping fund terrorist activities.
The lawsuit, filed by individuals from across the United States and at least six other countries, asked for damages exceeding one hundred trillion dollars. The lawyers said they were seeking “hundreds of billions” of dollars in damages.
Remember, they didn’t nail Capone for murder … they nailed him for tax evasion. Go for the purse strings.
I read an article on this yesterday, very interesting. Assuming that a reward is given, how will the trillion dollars be collected?? I understand how money can be taken from the charities, foundations and banks based or operating in the US, but how the heck are they going to get money from the Government of Sudan and/or the Saudi prince’s named?
Same way similar claims can be obtained (e.g., claims against Iran, against Cuba). Either banks/accounts are with us, or are in countries with agreements with us about such things, or are in countries that can be pressured or persuaded by us, or other financial or diplomatic steps can be taken.
So, for example, Saudi Prince Fred gets assessed for $1MM. He says screw you, and all the US govt can get from him (on behalf of the plaintiffs) is the $100K he has in a US bank account. The rest is in Switzerland and in Saudi banks.
We lean on the Swiss. Maybe they freeze his accounts (but don’t pay off) until the “matter is resolved.”
We find out what businesses he owns. If they do business with the US, we can look at seizing physical assets, impounding funds being transferred through those transactions, etc. We lean on companies doing business with him or his businesses to stop doing so until accounts are settled. The plaintiffs publicize the names of businesses that fail to do so.
We revoke his visa. We lean on our friends to do the same.
We can’t force him to pay. But we can be really annoying until he does.
The big question is, will the US actually lean on a Saudi prince over this?
