Nobody’s asked me to design a memorial at the Pentagon for the victims of that building during the 9-11 attacks, as well as the victims aboard the jet liner. But, had they, I’d probably have gone with something traditional — a spire, a plaque, some benches. Something comfortable and orthodox and appropriate to the setting, adding to the general background of monuments and memorials that dot DC.
Huh. Silly me. Don’t I know that the Memorial Biz isn’t about memory, it’s about Art (with an emphatic Capital A)?

(And they already did a plaque – they mounted a piece of the blasted structure with some words on it in the new repair work… This is the USA – we need more than a plaque, By GOD ::sarcasm intended::)
An interesting side note: The gentleman who created the actual perpetual flame that is the memorial to JFK just died. He happened to live here in the greater San Diego area. The idea for the memorial was Jackie Kennedy’s (based on one she had seen in France), and was decided upon in the hours after the Presedents death. This man, post engineer at Fort Meyer, VA., had to find a open hardware facility (not easy in the day’s when we closed our businesses to honor people) to purchase metal tubing. The store he found was closed, but the proprietor did answer the phone and offered to deliver anything that was needed. The builder, Col. Bernard G. Carroll Jr., had 48 hours to prepare the fixture, which has been renovated several times in the last nearly 40 years. His special reminder was the taper that Mrs Kennedy used to light the flame.
Though I have never seen this memorial in person, I am told by several folks who have that it is quite moving. Simple and yet profound. Something to strive for.

You know, after reading that article and thinking about what was said…there was a comparison made to the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial. That was a simple design…..a plaque for all those gone. A LARGE plaque. There’s nothing wrong with something like that. Perhaps the Pentagon site should try that approach…..in white. Might be kind of nice.
