So here’s the scoop.

The Good:

  • It looks as though I’ll be actually managing a larger group than before — still roughly aligned around Documentation Services, policy writing, and other keyboardy goodness, but also encompassing our Security Policy people and Business Continuity (or whatever we’re calling DR this week). In some ways, it will be back where I was a year ago, but strategically in a better position as far as the overall organization goes.
  • I’m being invited into conference calls (such as the departmental management call with the New Boss) and discussions again, which is both gratifying and reassuring.
  • The New Boss will be out here next Monday/Tuesday, and we’ll be figuring out the nuts and bolts of exactly what my department will be doing. And he’ll be out here again the following week with another of my peers, and we’ll be discussing more stuff.

    The Bad:

  • I have someone working for me (again) who I didn’t do well with last time.
  • The shake-up and juggling of these departments, over and over again, has created a morale problem. Now I have to deal with it. Unfortunately, it’s also made everyone sort of gun-shy, too, myself included, so dealing with it effectively is not going to be easy.

    The Ugly:

  • The New Boss asked me to call the folks who are going to be working for me, to let them know that the Old Boss is, effective today, moved into a different department, but reassure them that their missions are still intact, etc. Fine. While in the middle of that, got an IM from the Old Boss. He asked how things were going, was I getting any further direction, etc. Mentioned to him that I’d been in on the departmental management call this a.m., and, in what was intended to be as positive and congratulatory a fashion as possible, I said I’d heard he was moved into a different department today. Evidently this was news to him, and he’d been told that the departmental management call today had been cancelled, which was why he wasn’t on. Oops. And, ouch.

Overall, though, I think the Good news prevails here. It should be a very interesting, and hectic, next several weeks, even with all the holidays and vacation time aside.
