  1. It uses the concept of that when you are looking in the area at the symbol you will click in roughly the same spot. Deliberately clicking where the symbol is not screws it up.

  2. No, it doesn’t. It’s rigged. Although it gives you a list of a bunch of numbers, only some of them will ever be the answer to the math it asks you to do. Those numbers all have the same symbol beside them.

    It’s false randomness.

The answer to the calculation (X*10)+Y-(X+Y), where X and Y are single-digit numbers, will be X*9, and this will always be 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72 or 81 (i.e., a multiple of 9), so they just make it so the same symbol is always beside those 9 numbers and that that is the symbol which appears in the crystal ball.

  4. What David said. There are only ten possible answers.

    Consider a two-digit number with a tens place t and a ones place o. Then the ‘mind reading’ algorithm you’re supposed to follow gives you:

    to – (t + o) = to – t – o = t0 – t

    That is, every two-digit number starting with 1 results in 10-1 = 9.
    Every two-digit number starting with 2 results in 20-2 = 18.
    And so forth. They all turn out to be multiples of 9; and all the multiples of 9 are assigned the same symbol in the chart.

    (The exception appears to be 0. Apparently the author doesn’t consider 05, for example, to be a valid two-digit number.)

    And what’s left out of the explanations above is that each reload of the page changes the symbols around, so that when you get a “correct” answer again, it’s a different symbol, so it feels like it’s answering something different each time.
