Here’s the story about my mother-in-law’s Woman of Distinction award from last week, which finally made it into the LA Times on Saturday:
Newport social activist and leader Sandy Segerstrom Daniels joined fellow community standout Ginger Kleerup as the 2003 Women of Distinction selected by The Girl Scout Council of Orange County.
Santa Ana Country Club was the setting for the March luncheon. Ladies and gents filled the posh club to support the Girl Scouts and, in particular, to salute Segerstrom and Kleerup.
Gail Ellis-Olds, representing the Girl Scout Council of Orange County, proudly shared the backgrounds of the honorees.
“Ginger Kleerup celebrates 50 years as a member of Girl Scouts,” Ellis-Olds said. “She is one of our most extraordinary volunteers serving on the council’s board of directors as well as the fund development committee and many other administrative volunteer roles.” […]
I’m obliged to mention that Ginger has also been officially labeled a “Living Treasure” by the GSCOC, much to her chagrin. Be sure you refer to her that way when you meet her next.
The Register has finally caught up with the story.
“Juliette Low formed the first Girl Scout troop in Savannah, Georgia, 91 years ago today,” said Christine Shingleton, president of the Girl Scout Council of Orange County, as she opened the group’s annual Women of Distinction Luncheon on March 12 at the Santa Ana Country Club. The event drew 210 guests to honor two women who have given generously to the community.
[…] Ginger Kleerup marks her 50th year in scouting this year. “I am who I am today because of Girl Scouts,” the honoree said. “Scouting offers a young girl access to all kinds of people, places and activities she wouldn’t get in a school setting.” Council CEO Jeannie Burns said that more than 50 million American women were Girl Scouts.
Council member Martha Fluor served as event emcee, and Ann Crane was event chair. Guests enjoyed colorful badge kits as table centerpieces as well as the famous Girl Scout mint cookie atop dessert. More than $15,000 was netted for Orange County scouting.
