Our little girl

Virginia Postrel complains that MSNBC and Fox are tending to refer to Pfc. Jessica Lynch as “Jessica” on-air. If it were Pfc. James Lynch, would they be calling him James?…

But Jessica Lynch is not the little girl who fell down the well. She is a U.S. soldier serving in harm’s way. If you’re old enough to be a POW, you’re old enough to be referred to as “Private Lynch.” Even if you’re female.

Well said.

  1. Q: What would I call a female POW who fixes M1 tanks and carries an M-16?

    A: Anything she wants!

That, and a bona fide hero who deserves respect. At least give her the dignity of a last name, dear media.

  2. Enough of Jessica Lynch already!!! She made a worng turn and was a POW for E I G H T days! Count ’em! E I G H T !!! Why is the damned media (mostly female-notice!) trying to turn this woman into a cross between Alvin York and Audie Murphy-Two real heroes!(But male, unfortunatley). And where were these same media types when the Viet-Nam POW’s came home after 6 – 7 – and 8 YEARS of captivity!?!?!?!? And who was the Village Idiot who made the remark that she was the first Female POW? Hey Honey! Ever Hear of BATAAN? CORREIGADOR? Why don’t you get you head out of your ass before you try to turn someone who can’t read a map into a national hero just because she’s a woman? And what about the rest of her team? Where are they? Or don’t you care about them, because they were men?

  3. I agree that Pfc Lynch’s situation has been a bit overblown over the past few days. While I’ve seen some reports that would imply her conduct deserves a bit more lionizing than your commentary, Ralph, I think it’s a bit early for all that — and I certainly don’t need to get a medical update on her condition in Germany.

Good point on female POWs in WWII, as well as on the Nam POWs.

I don’t think the overwrought nature of coverage of her rescue (which is, itself, noteworthy, and probably why this story has gotten off the ground) is a female-generated thing, though. I do think the fact that she is a “cute girl” is part of it (if pressed, I’d guess that her being a cute white girl is even more accurate, but that’s just a hunch).

  4. I will agree that it was only eight days that she was in captivity, but this girl did make it throough the ordeals of being a POW. Can any of you out there (Dave,Ralph) says that you know what she has been through. I can agree that there are others that have had the cards dealt more unevenly, but until you have been there; sit on your chair and be proud of what she has done.

  6. I certainly didn’t mean any disrespect to the job that Pfc Lynch did, or the ordeal she went through, or the bravery of those who rescued her. I do think the media has gone a bit overboard with the story, (not surprisingly).
