For fans of the movie Vertigo — or of San Francisco as it was in 1958 and as it is now — this site has a number of photo comparisons between movie scenes and how those streets look at present.
Bigger trees.
A lot more one way streets.
By and large, a nicer looking city.
Cool stuff.

I went through the site yesterday — very cool, indeed. It’s interesting to see tree growth and what it’s done to views.
Both for good and for ill. I mean, I’m sure it makes walking down the sidewalk in a lot of areas a lot more comfortable, and I’m sure that there would be a righteous hue and cry if somenoe proposed cutting a lot of them down. But they do obscure both the natural and manmade (architectural) vistas.
From my own gardening experience, I think sometimes it’s as important to know when to remove a plant as to know when to put one in.
One must consider the strict (and possible stupid) rules of living in San Fran.
Mario (who lives a stones throw from the photo of Market and Castro) needed to move a tree in order to open his basement area for a garage. A permit was required before the contractor could uproot the tree and move it over a foot. Not a permit for the constuction, a permit to move the tree. I can’t imagine what happens when a tree dies!
