  1. Can’t: Out of Sight, the Cell, Chasing Amy, Shakespeare In Love, Dogma. If someone wants to launch a diatribe they should get it right. There’s been good work in between the tripe.

As I recall the movie, Bergman was about as appealing as a mannequin. I’m sure tha J-Lo can beat that. But Affleck in the Bogie roll? BARTLEBY!!

  2. The very thought of this movie makes me shudder. It’s not for no little reason that many people consider it the greatest film of all time (not me — the first Raiders movie holds that distinction in my book).

For the record, I don’t see what folks see in J-Ho, other than a big booty. Can’t sing, mediocre actress. I think it’s just that she’s a girl from the South Bronx; heaven knows, I see dozens just like her every day on the #6 train that passes through that particular region.

  3. I agree that Affleck has had his moments (haven’t seen enough J-Lo to argue one way or another). I object on principle to what seems to be a “Hey, we have the popular folks who are romantically linked, so let’s remake a classic love story with them in it, ’cause we’ll make zillions” stink to it.

  4. There are some things you shouldn’t mess with. Trying to remake a classic like Casablanca is one of those things! I dont care who is in the cast.

Heaven help us if they try to re-make Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark in twenty years…..

  5. As I was mentioning to Margie yesterday, remakes per se aren’t necessary a bad thing. Stage productions get restaged on a regular basis; heck, look at all the various Shakespeare movies over the past few decades.

The ones that worked were the ones that tried to bring something interesting and new to the equation, often in setting.

That tends to be true of movie remakes as well. There’s no reason why, in principle, you couldn’t do a remake of Casablanca, if you brought a strong vision that was worth seeing and sharing.

If you’re doing it just to be a star vehicle, though, it’s almost guaranteed to be crap.

  6. Ah, let them do it. And when it flops it will stand as an off-hand compliment to the original. I know I wouldn’t go to see it. At least not for those two actors. I can’t think of who I WOULD go see it for, but not them.

Heck, “Miracle on 34th Street” has been redone at least twice now, if not more. Granted it’s not quite the classic “Casablanca” is, but if it can survive remaking, other movies can.

Actually, a “Casablanca” remake would be more interesting as a culture study (ie, what they do to “modernize/sanitize” it) than as a movie.

  7. To clarify: it’s a stupid idea and the movie will probably stink. I just don’t think either of them is “execrable”. Probably will bomb, but I never try to predict the whims of the moviegoing public.
