Story time

Katherine has realized she can tell stories, too, usually by assigning roles from stories she already knows to various people around her. “You be the giant, and I be Goldylocks!”

Last night, at bath time, I was Baby Bear and she was Mommy Bear. We’d exchanged roles a few times (as soon as you come up with something fun with your role, or she runs up against a dead end with hers, she shuffles the cast around), and so, as I had done, she was offering me honey by scooping water out of the bathtub.

“No thank you, Mommy,” I said. “Can I have a cheesey stick instead?” I like tossing her curve balls.

You could see the mental gears shifting and grinding in her head as she considered, then grabbed onto the best response previous experience provided. “No, we all out of cheesey sticks,” she said, just like we’ve told her a dozen times before. I don’t know, though, that she’s ever said that before.

“Can I have some yoggy [yogurt]?”

She was ready for me this time. “We all out of yoggy, too!”

Too clever by half. I settled for the honey.
