Lots of spring snow + hot weather = lots of water

Thus, stories like this.

At least my folks missed this bit by a week:

A sinkhole the size of a car opened up under Interstate 70 near Vail on Sunday after an underground culvert failed. It forced the highway to be closed in both directions, and hundreds of homes were evacuated as water roared through town.
State transportation officials said it will be at least two days before the damage to I-70 can be repaired.
[…] The closure is centered between the Copper Mountain and Dowd Junction exits. Motorists heading to Vail are being sent on a 54-mile detour through Leadville along Highway 24 to Highway 91. Stegman said truckers are being encouraged to head north to I-80 in Wyoming.
“The entire (westbound) left lane as well as part of the right lane are gone, and it’s still eroding under the right lane,” Stegman said. “Any weight of traffic could have a major impact.”
She said repairs could take “two days, a week or more” because even once the water is drained, the earth under the highway will remain unstable for some time.

Yeesh.
