Well, I was going to write all about the bishop’s election, and our flight out here, and the interesting meetings thus far, and watching Daredevil, and dinner with the CIO, and traffic jams this morning, and SoCal plants I miss, and my disdain for the upcoming League of Supporting Actors to Sean Connery, and my Cooper Mini test drive, and Supreme Court decisions, and all that.
But … I think I’m going to go to bed, well-fed and well-wined, instead.
You hit on something that’s been bothering me about the League previews — one of the things that I always enjoy in the comics is that Mina is the Leader — when it all comes down to it, she’s the one in charge and Quartermain is another one of the Gentlemen — perhaps a bit more central than, say, Jeckle, but still… secondary.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is led by a woman… ironic, etc.
It’s a shame that they didn’t go that way with it, but I don’t suppose they could have with Connery in that role. (Which of course then begs the question about whether or not getting Connery will actually help the story or hurt it.)
I’ve been slowly reaching the conclusion that Connery s such a big star that movie scripts in development end up being seriously warped by his being signed on. LoEG may be one case of that (Quartermain is hardly a prominent character, let alone a particularly heroic one); The Avengers is another.
