This is the sort of thing that folks dream of when growing up and considering a career in science. At least when they’re the third grade.
It’s one of the unfortunate consequences of being a mammal – flatulence. And, more unfortunately for a group of whale researchers, nature took its course right under their noses – literally.
The researchers claim this is the first photograph of a minke whale letting one go in the icy waters of Antarctica. It was taken from the bow of a research vessel.
“We got away from the bow of the ship very quickly … it does stink,” said Nick Gales, a research scientist from the Australian Antarctic Division.
I can just see the future dialog now.
“Daddy!!!“
“Just be glad I’m not a minke whale, honey.”

Wow, I’ll think of this eveytime I’m having a bad day at the office. How many PHD’s thought that they would be collecting whale dung as part of their careers? And how would someone go about collecting whale dung? There are so many questions and so few answers.
