One of the more disturbing things to come out of the 70s — and surviving to this day — are Motivational Posters. You know the ones — an eagle soars over a forest, a crystal blue lake below it, while in the border below the picture, there’s a big “PERFORMANCE” and below it in smaller type, “Eagles soar because they’re looking for good job reviews.” Or something of that sort.
So in this month’s Diamond Comics, there are offers for various motivational posters … starring Marvel Comics characters.
Okay, Captain America and PATRIOTISM is a natural match. Spider-Man and CHARACTER work, and he works even better with (natch) RESPONSIBILITY.
And you could argue that Wolverine, as a mutant, goes well with POSSIBILITIES.
But the Hulk and GOALS? This for the Jade Giant who wandered aimlessly across the Marvel Universe for decades?
The one that takes the cake, though, is the Punisher and COMMITMENT.
Okay, COMMITMENT as in being committed to an asylum? Or COMMITMENT as a euphamism for OBSESSION? In either case, is there a reason we’d want to see a psychopathic vigilante who runs around gunning down criminals without mercy as, well, a model for inspiration?
Hell, is that what we managers want to encourage our employees to be like?
Yeesh.
Oh I WANT one.
The Hulk I remember from the silver and bronze age comics shares my goal: “Hulk just wants to be left alone.”
Did I mention Elektra and EXCELLENCE?
Yes, I want all of you employees to show the devotion to excellence — not to mention sociopathic disregard for who gets in the way — that this infamous assassin-for-hire shows. Now get out there and carve up the competition!
