So, one trip to CompUSA, one examination of multiple Wireless Routers, and home again with a Netgear Cable/DSL Wireless Router (MR814) — NAT, SPI firewall, VPN accessible, 4 Ethernet ports and 802.11b wireless capability.
A few tweaks, a few twists … and, hey, presto — both machines tied in via wireless to the router. And it survives rebooting and everything. Huzzah!
Once everything feels stable, I’ll get WEP installed, too, as well as looking what it does for firewall protection vs. the software on our PCs. I’ll also need to look at Cable Modems. We’re paying $3/mo for ours, but new ones were about $70, so that’s a couple of years-worth. Alas, no router/modem combos were to be had — but we’ll see.
Oh, and I need to get my notebook connecting to Margie’s printer again. But that should be … well, no need to tempt fate.
To quote the computer geek in Goldeneye: I am inwincible!
Printing to Margie’s printer is now working, thanks to some past blogging.
Instead of doing WEP — which I mistrust for some reason — I might just restrict through the router (whose admin password I have, of course, changed) the MAC addresses of machines that can use it.
You should probably check and make sure you can use a cable modem other than comcast’s before you shell out any money. My dad purchased a different modem only to find out they didn’t support the one he bought, and that is why it wouldn’t work.
Huh. Interesting though. The sales guy I talked to during the initial sale mentioned buying a cable modem of my own. I’ll certainly check before I buy.
You do realize the computer geek in GoldenEye is later known as Nightcrawler and also Floop?
But you rock. 🙂
I had forgotten that he played Nightcrawler (though you know, of course, the other prominent cast member who also was in both flicks).
Don’t know who Floop is, alas.
Still, it’s a Pavlovian phrase for me when I attain some computer-related success (with the immediate ironic recollection of What Happened Next — which helps keep the hubris down).
