The Angela Lansbury/George Hearn Broadway instance of Sweeney Todd is finally — finally — being released for DVD. Huzzah!…
I want the Angela Lansbury/Len Cariou, damnit!
Alas, I don’t think that combo was recorded/filmed.
I have an old bootleg video of the Lansbury/Hearn pairing (I bought it as supposedly authentic from eBay, so I ended up getting it for free), which I’d seen eons before on PBS. It suffers from the usual flaws of any taped stage production — the camera is far more narrow than the eye is in tracking business, and more slipshod; the make-up and stage acting seem more over the top than we’re used to, etc.
Still, very nice. I look forward to eventually adding it to my collection.
I had a borrowed video too, but I could have sworn it was Len Cariou. It was a PBS special, or A&E, something like. I’d borrowed the tape for “Into The Woods” (because I was about to be in a production of it), and Sweeney was just on the same tape… I fell in love that day. Best damn musical thingummyever.
Perhaps what I saw was the Hearn version, then. In which case I’m pre-ordering now, and thanks for the tip-off!
When you get it can I borrow it?
If it’s the A&E/PBS one, then, yes, it’s Hearn. Cariou is on the Broadway soundtrack, though. As I understand it.
And, yes, Stan, of course.
