The last films in the top 200 grossers are finally coming to DVD. Lucasfilm has announced that the original Star Wars triology will be released in September. Previously, Lucas had said they would not come out until after Episode 3 hits theaters in 5/2005.

The DVD versions will be the “enhanced” ones that came out in the 90s, with improved sfx and a few controversial bits (including Greedo shooting first). These are meant to be the “sole version available,” according to a Lucasfilm veep.

Of course, I’m sure if there’s a clamor, Lucas will reluctantly (but profitably) release the “classic” trilogy on DVD — a year or two later. For another fifty smackers, natch.

  1. So the Theatrical Versions by, say, 2010.

    I can wait.

It will take that long to get the foul taste of the last three out of my mouth.

  2. I wouldn’t hold your breath about the originals being released. I’ve read that if Lucas had his way they’d never see the light of day….since he is so much prouder of the “improved” versions. I’m frankly shocked that he bowed to the pressure to even put them on DVD since he thinks it is just a “fad”.
I have also heard that they “destroyed” the original format of the movies.

  3. Well, y’see, I haven’t come close to running out of desire to see additional footage of LotR … whereas Lucas has reissued the original SW on VHS multiple times, with additional hoohahs each iteration, plus the Special Editions most recently.

I remain convinced we’ll see the originals issued on DVD, albeit perhaps bundled with the New Improved versions.

  4. If Lucas is eager to keep the original trilogy under lock and key, I’ll betcha he’s burned the tapes of that thing. 🙂

According to Steve Sansweet, at a convention in Australia, George Lucas said something to the effect “that if he had the time and a hammer, he would track down every bootlegged copy of that program and smash it.”

I couldn’t bring myself to download the Princess Leia song.

  5. Just as well. The link to the Leia song is broken.

But Lucas ain’t gettin’ my copy! The quality of the bootleg tape is almost as bad as the quality of the program itself, and I may never be able to bring myself to watch it again, but I must own it. Yesssssss…

  6. So lets see, that will mean at least 2 more versions of SW.
Already have IV-VI original format, IV-VI THX Widescreen,
and IV-VI THX Special Edition. All VHS. feh.
Of course, I’ll buy any other version that comes out.
    Except of course laserdisc. heh.
