Pronunciations mean things

Some of these Most Often Mispronounced Words regularly make me wince when I hear them. Particularly the cavalry/Calvary one. (via Kottke)…

  1. May I recommend The Big Book of Beastly Mispronunciations : The Complete Opinionated Guide for the Careful Speaker? It’s written by one of the hosts of KPBS‘s show A Way with Words. If I had Sundays off, I’d listen to it on the internet every week. It’s very educational, and great fun for all word-lovers (as is NPR‘s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me, which, sadly, cannot be heard on the web–I have to try to make my lunch break coincide with the show each Saturday).

By the way, Dave, did you deliberately misspell pronunciations?

  2. I have commited a most grievous error. The NPR show I wished to recommend to word-lovers was actually Says You!. WWDTM is great fun, but is a humorous quiz show based on the week’s news, and does not focus on fun with wordplay. Sorry, folks.
