Bob Bemer has passed away.
Who’s Bob Bemer? Or, rather, what did he do?
Hell, what didn’t he do in founding modern computing? He:
- Invented ASCII
- Invented the ESCape sequence (and ESC key).
- Invented (well, helped invent) COBOL.
- Put the backslash into ASCII..
- Helped create the 8-bit-per-byte standard.
- Was one of the first folks to warn (back in 1971!) of the Y2K problem.
Wow. He received the IEEE Computer Pioneer Award in 2002.
