Is it my imagination, or is there a similarity between the famous Queen “News of the World” album cover robot (itself derived from a famous sf pulp magazine cover) and the I, Robot robot? Or is it just the inevitable similarity between smooth, hairless, slightly startled/confused robotic faces?
(I don’t think it’s a “rip” by any means, just inevitable coincidence. Still …)
Frank Kelly Freas did the original Astounding Stories cover and the cover for the Queen album, so he benefitted mightily from the “derivation”.
Yep, I do think the bots from the hack movie are derivative. No, I’ll bet they did not offer Freas a thin dime.
Ah. This one .
On the other hand, it’s not this .
No, I don’t see it. Sonny’s face is much softer, the lines of his nose and cheekbones, and the shape of his skull, are very different. I’d have to go with that “smooth, hairless, slightly startled/confused” robotic thing.
I thought I, Robot was great, BTW. If you enjoy it as an action movie with an Asimov twist, that is. Pity the poor nerds who try to get the full depth of an Asimov novel out of that movie, though.
