I keep track of websites and blogs that I want to go back to in a bookmarks folder. This folder tends to get very large over time, because I rarely get back to it. But I find it’s better to pause and consider and see if a second visit to a site is as entertaing as the first, because, damn, otherwise you end up with a whole hell of a lot of websites in your blogroll, many of which turn out to be just so-so.

So … through the help of the very nice Firefox bookmark manager, I’ve been over the last week reviewing the sites in that folder. And, y’know what? It’s a lot faster job of reviewing and tossing when you’ve reached the point where sites devoted solely to political ranting (of any stripe) set your teeth grinding like a lathe, and you’ve decided you really don’t need to take it any more.

“Bush is an evil goofball!” Delete. “Kerry is a French-speaking waffler!” Toss. “Religious rightists, with the support of Bush, are out to eat our babies!” Remove. “Godless heathen are out to make us all bow down to Satan, who is really Kerry!” Trash.

Getting rid of stuff is a lot easier when your tastes have changed.

  1. Hey! I protest! What’s wrong with “just so-so” blogs? We’re organized, ya know. There’s more of us than there are of you!

We’re here! We’re…mildly interesting! Get used to it!

  2. Heh. That’s the problem — there are so many, I could easily spend the other four hours of the day reading so-so blogs and not even begin to scratch them. 🙂
