A protege of Aaron Copeland, one of the greatest film composers, Elmer Bernstein, has died.
Bernstein’s work in film includes The Man with the Golden Arm, The Ten Commandments, The Birdman of Alcatraz, Walk in the Wild Side, To Kill a Mockingbird, Hawaii, Thoroughly Modern Millie, True Grit, Animal House, Meatballs, Airplane!, Stripes, An American Werewolf in London, The Blues Brothers (God music), Ghostbusters, My Left Foot, The Grifters, The Age of Innocence, and The Wild Wild West (1999). On TV, he composed the theme to Gunsmoke, the National Geographic Specials, The Big Valley, The Rookies, Captains & the Kings, and Ellery Queen. All of which are among many others. He had ten Oscar nominations, and one win (1968 for Thoroughly Modern Millie), alongside a plethora of Golden Globe, Grammy, and Emmy nominations and wins..
