Chunky or smooth? Ginger or Mary Ann? Loose end of the toilet paper over the front or down the back?

Now, add to that, this profound question: How do you sort your e-mail? Do new messages show up at the top of your inbox screen, with older messages trailing down below? Or do they show up at the bottom, with older message trailing upwards?

Take the poll!

How does your e-mail inbox sort?
I make sure it’s Newest at Top, of course. Any other way is sheer madness!
I make sure it’s Newest at Bottom, naturally, the way God intended it!
It’s Newest at Top, but that’s just the way the program came.
It’s Newest at Bottom, but I didn’t change it or anything.
A mix, depending on the e-mail program I’m using.
I dunno. I never noticed before. I’ll have to go check.

  1. I typically did newest at the top, but after recently reading an entry somewhere (Jeremy’s, I think), I switched it around so that newest are at the bottom. I like it. Works more like a queue, so that if I have older entries gathering dust, I have to deal with them regularly, instead of just losing them at the bottom of the list…

  2. I used to be a religiously new-at-bottom guy (still am, with Outlook at work), but GMail is new at the top and can’t be altered. I whined about it for all of three minutes before the ohh-shinies distracted me.

  3. I’m of the Whatever The Default is. I think. My Outlook has new messages at the top (like new memos impaled on a big spike on my desk). My Thunderbird has new messages at the bottom (like the front of a card catlog); I’m not sure any more if that’s the default, or if that’s just how I was used to it with Outlook Express.

It only becomes confusing when I have both open at the same time — a rarity, since inside my company’s network POP is blocked, and outside of it I can’t see the Exchange server.
