Reports are that Song of the South will be released on DVD in 2006, its 60th anniversary.
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah!
I actually wasn’t all that wowed by the flick when I finally saw it on a bootlegged cross-region disk (from Japan, I believe), but I support its release on the principle that it’s better for folks to have a choice than to have the choice withdrawn because of “political sensitivities,” i.e., concerns that blacks in general (or at least some vocal ones) will consider the film racist. Disney is evidently looking at various ways (an introduction by an African American actor, for example) to try to defuse that sentiment. We’ll see.
Maybe, at least, it will lead to future Br’er Critter flicks, which would almost certainly be a good thing.
