While it’s kind of keen that the USPS will be issuing stamps of major DC heroes — the actual selection of mug shots and covers is — odd.
There are some classic Golden and Silver Age pics, but — what’s with the Wonder Woman head shot? And … Plastic Man? Supergirl? The Neal Adams GL is a nice pic, but … well, those are hardly the most iconic of covers or images.
At least they have the “classic” Supergirl, not the crop-topped current one.
Get ready for complaints from the peanut gallery that comic books are too trivial for stampage. Like our – former – mayor who complained that our downtown was taken over by “the likes of comic-book stores and tattoo parlors”. (Until someone pointed out to him that our downtown comic-book store was actualy a tourist attraction and brought people into town to shop – heh)
Hope they sell like crazy. I liked the Batman image at the upper-right.
The juxtaposition of different art styles in the stamps is a bit jarring — Jim Lee’s Batman being an example that doesn’t work well with other items.
As for the triviality of comic books as subjects of stamps — so are Judy Garland, Baseball Sluggers, Gee’s Bend Quilts, Favorite Children’s Books Animals, or Disney Romance that much weightier? Or, conversely, how many of the Famous American Diplomats can the mayor name?
I “worry” more about why it is that we have DC heroes, and no Marvel ones. No Spidey, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Thing, Hulk, and whatever female heroines they think of to keep it from being too glaringly masculine.
My personal favorites, the Batman in the upper right, the Green Arrow cover down below.
But… Plastic Man? *blinks* What a weird weird choice…
I have, frankly, never understood the appeal of Plastic Man. And he hardly seems so prominent a character to be so featured.
Heck, why not Captain Marvel? DC owns him these days.
