J-Walk has some great suggestions on how to improve State of the Union speech viewership (which is less than half of number of folk who watch the Super Bowl) including:
– Hire an attractive spokes-model to promote the speech at NASCAR events.
– Hook up with major advertisers for endorsements. For example, Budweiser could be the official beer of the SOTU and Ford could be the official car.
– Hire Garth Brooks to record a SOTU song, and pay radio stations so it becomes a #1 hit the week before the speech.
– Research shows that viewers get bored with long speeches. Therefore, they should break up the speech into about 10 segments, with commercial breaks. Advertisers would happily prepare expensive “SOTU commercials” and viewers would tune in just to watch the ads.
Proceeds of the latter could go toward paying down the national debt.

Well, for the SOTU, we can modify the saying’s answer to, “When the audience gives a standing ovation.” 😉
