A fun site that you can enter a surname into and see how it’s distributed across the US. Hill is common enough to be pretty widespread, but more exotic names (like Margie’s and Doyce’s surnames) are a bit more fun to look up.
(Sort of wish it would average it out based on state population, as an option, but still entertaining.)

But, if I go through and spell out all the known variations, the numbers look much better.

My last name has an unusual spelling, and there are several states where it’s not found. The state where I was born has less than 5!
My roommate’s name is apparently more common, and is found in all states. I’ve never met anyone else with her last name.
I looked up the name of my favorite living actress. Only one state listed, with less than 5, and it’s not California! Very odd.
