There’s a story here …
… so, yesterday, Katherine informed us that her “school name” was “Kay.” She’d started telling her teachers and the like about it. And today she informed us that she wants it to be her home name, too.
Seems that she got the idea when she met someone named “Jay.” And she realized that “Kay” was a lot shorter to write than “Katherine.”
My little girl … (sniff) … all growing up.
Of course, we chose the name “Katherine” precisely because it had so many possible variations. That she’s chosen one of those variations already is still kind of jarring. And we’ll see how long it lasts (not buying anything engraved for her as yet).
And, of course, she’ll always be our little Kitten.

I’d wondered if you used a shorter version of her name, since Katherine is long-ish. It’s always called my attention that in the US nicknames are a really common thing.
I like the sound of Kay.. Kathy, Katie are all nice but more common, aren’t they? Must be a little strange starting to call her something new. Cool that she chose it.
We’d actually suggested shorter versions earlier — Kate, for example — but she’d always rejected them. And we’ve been very proud that she’s done such a bang-up job with her longer name (pronouncing it and writing it). That said, it’s (within limits) her call.
Not sure the name is “sticking” yet, but we’ll see.
