Lucasfilm has announced it will (despite earlier insistance it wouldn’t) issue the original, unenhanced, untweaked, un-Greedo-shoots-first versions of the original Star Wars trilogy, coming this September.
Which begs the question of whether this is a response to fan demands for such a release, or another clever ploy by Lucasfilm to get big sales of yet another release of the SW flicks. Or, perhaps, both …
It’s a shame that the theatrical release is a “bonus feature” and not the main feature. I think Lucasfilm is taking this approach to help George keep to the letter of his promise to never directly release the theatrical versions.
Still, I don’t want to pay anything for the retconned editions. I’d much rather own the theatrical releases on the main disc, and maybe the old televised “Behind the Scenes” specials that CBS used to broadcast to support the movies.
I think I’ll stick to my homebrewed videotape-to-DVD transfers.
Interesting. I had missed that particular spin. Evidently the DVDs are of the 2004 releases, with the original 70s-80s versions as a “Feature.”
Are the original ’70’s/’80’s versions presented in their entirety? If so, I’m still getting them. If not (if it’s only a ‘comparison clips’ presentation’ then I shall remain aloof waiting for the right one.
Reading the Lucasfilm release above, it sounds like the full theatrical releases are included (as “Features”). I agree that a comparison clips presentation would be goofy.
