  1. A history of Congressional sex scandals, esp. regarding the page program. What’s of note is (a) neither party comes out looking particularly good, and (b) how many of the scandals ended up not actually significantly hurting the candidates in question. Though, of course, what’s blowing up in the Foley mess is not just the representative’s pervy behavior, but how the House/GOP Leadership quietly sat on their thumbs about it.
  2. Someone who believes the Foley scandal has come about from the GOP going all squishy and “big tent,” letting “moderates” like Foley into party. Right. Though at least he dismisses increasing efforts to portray all of this as a page prank or a dastardly “October Surprise.”
  3. The danger to the GOP isn’t that their supporters will switch their votes over to Dems — it’s that they may just throw up their hands in disgust and stay home on election day.
  4. I can’t find it online yet, but NPR broadcast a snippet from Newt Gingrich, in which he basically blamed the whole thing on “democrats and liberals and the media,” that it’s their fault that this is all such a big scandal. Right. While certainly the Dems are more than willing to make hay while the sun shines, and the media love a scandal — if there weren’t any there there, if Foley hadn’t been a perv and the GOP Leadership dithering and ineffectual (to put the nicest spin on it) in dealing
with him, then we wouldn’t be hearing anything about this. That’s where the blame lies, Newt.

  1. Wait, Newt “Family Values” Gingrich says it’s okay to send sexually explicit messages to underage subordinates (of the same sex, no less), as long as no one catches you?

    “Don’t get caught, ’cause that’s a crime.”
