See, I have no trouble with this Ten Commandments for Ethical Atheists. And I agree with J-Walk that we’d probably all be wiser and happier if folks adhered to these.
- Thou SHALT NOT believe all thou art told.
- Thou SHALT seek knowledge and truth constantly.
- Thou SHALT educate thy fellow man in the Laws of Science.
- Thou SHALT NOT forget the atrocities committed in the name of god.
- Thou SHALT leave valuable contributions for future generations.
- Thou SHALT live in peace with thy fellow man.
- Thou SHALT live this one life thou hast to its fullest.
- Thou SHALT follow a Personal Code of Ethics.
- Thou SHALT maintain a strict separation between Church and State.
- Thou SHALT support those who follow these commandments.
I have real trouble with number three. The people who need to be educated are the ones who ignore any facts that conflict with their established beliefs. “Well, I don’t really believe in fossils.”
It’s amazing how many of them try to justify their disbelief of the above by saying “Carbon dating only works on things a few thousand years old.” AAARGH! Who said carbon dating was involved??? Please learn about science before you try to invoke it!
Well, there is that. Teaching is only as good as the knowledge base (and technique) of the teacher.
Who was it that said “You can’t reason somebody out of something they weren’t reasoned into”?
