When a TV show or movie with a particular political or religious standpoint (or being accused of such) are “forced off the air” by angry folks calling and writing and e-mailing and threatening boycotts of the network involved, inevitably there are cries of foul and censorship and accusations of dark conspiracies against the voices of truth and justice.
Nobody seems to be making those claims about the cancellation of the grotesque OJ Simpson If I Did It book and TV special, announced cancelled by News Corp.
“I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project,” said Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. chairman. “We are sorry for any pain that his has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson.”
It’s not often I find myself in agreement with Rupert Murdoch, but, yeah, “ill-considered” is a delightfully understated description here.
The fact that FOX ever even considered airing the special – even considered producing such an abomination – tells me a lot about FOX.
ABC turned the thing down flat.
