George Lucas has announced that filming on the next Indiana Jones film will commence next year, to be in theaters May 2008.

Lucas said he and director Steven Spielberg recently finalized the script for the film.

Lucas kept mum about the plot, but said that the latest installment will be a “character piece” that will include “very interesting mysteries. … I think it’s going to be really cool,” Lucas said.

“It’s going to be fantastic. It’s going to be the best one yet,” the 62-year-old filmmaker said during a break from preparing for his duties as grand marshal of Monday’s Rose Parade, the AP reported.

Given that he thought Star Wars I-III were cool and fantastic …

Still, one can but hope. And the SW-related stuff for the Rose Parade is sounding very cool.

  3. I don’t know, I’ve always been of the opinion that the critical flaw in the Star Wars prequels was not that Lucas wrote them or produced them, but that he was directing them himself. If he’d let someone else work with the actors, the movies would have been much more interesting because audiences would have been invested in the characters.

The article cites Spielberg as director, and while I’ll admit I’ve lost interest in Spielberg’s more recent works, at least it’s not Lucas.

That said, this is kind of like digging up the Rocky franchise after 20 years…

  4. Digging up the Rocky franchise like a zombie and shambling it past the audience again is just silly.

The Indy franchise *could* be done — trying to mix the adventure and humor and mystery with the reality that Ford (and much of the audience) is a lot older could make a film that’s entertaining and enjoyable. And, yes, that both Spielberg and Ford are there as counterbalances to Lucas gives me some encouragement.

We’ll see — and, yeah, I’ll be standing in line opening night.

  5. Yeah …

After the announcement of Lucas being Grand Marshall and some special SW-related parade stuff, I made a special point (beyond the normal family obsession here) to watch it.

    Ewoks. Yeah.

And the Naboo float was … well, pretty.

And the 501st Stormtrooper Batallion really needs to learn to march better. Bad formations, really.
