… to have had one of these when I was a kid. The ads were all over the comic books, and though I know it would have been a horrible disappointment — damn, I wanted one. I mean — firing rockets and torpedoes — what could be more cool?

I wanted one of these, too. Ahh, that would have been grand, eh?
Dueling submarines! Run silent, run deep!
Yes, I too wanted t buy that thing….but My Dad did a bit of how much X amount of dollars would buy and there was no way I could buy something like that for what they were showing and it was just a scam to rip off money.
Which….
With Comic Book Day being wednesday it made me think while reading X-men: At what point in time did the Comic’s stop advertising things like X-ray specs and such?
I stopped buying comics in the late seventies (when moved to Doomfield and the ability to buy comics deminished due to lack of availablity) and only picked up again this decade, so there is a huge gap of time that I missed out on when these adds had to have stopped.
My guess/recollection is early/mid-80s — the comic demographic changed from “little kids” to “older kids / HS / college” and beyond, so the ad revenue possible from “Got Milk” and video game and other such ads became a lot more attractive.
