It takes a big ship to make the Golden Gate Bridge look small(er). In this case, the Queen Mary II, which passed under the bridge with just thirty feet to spare. Yikes!

  1. Interestingly, in its original design, the stack was supposed to be taller to more closely match the look of the QM, but the ship would not have cleared the Verrazano Bridge out of New York Harbor. At high tide, the QMII clears that bridge by only 10 feet. Having made that passage myself, it’s a pretty cool and disturbing sight to watch the ship approach the bridge.

  2. I bet that would be disturbing.

I have a friend that was a navy seaman. His ship he was on is huge and every once is awhile traveled under the Golden Gate Bridge. He said every time they did, the joke was to tell one of the new electricians aboard that the antenna towers had to be taken down so the boat would make it.

He said it got them every time since from a far it looks like the boat wouldn’t make it.
