Has the film adaptation of Alan Moore’s Watchmen finally been cast?  Variety thinks so, with official announcements coming out this week at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Billy Crudup as Dr Manhattan
Patrick Wilson as Night Owl
Matthew Goode as Ozymandias
Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the Comedian
Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach
Malin Ackerman as the Silk Spectre

I’d feel a lot better if I actually recognized any of those names …

  1. Without actually IMDBing anyone…

Billy Crudup as Dr Manhattan — I definitely pictured someone more imposing and intellectual as Dr. Manhattan, but Crudup’s done some good stuff, acting-wise. His personal life is a shambles — he’s the one that left Mary Louise Parker pregnant to go off and date someone younger (Claire Danes, maybe?)
Patrick Wilson as Night Owl — Love him! Broadway actor/singer gone Hollywood. I saw him starring in The Full Monty. On screen, he was in Little Children with Kate Winslet and got good reviews.
Matthew Goode as Ozymandias — no clue.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the Comedian — Isn’t he the guy who plays the CIA agent in Casino Royale?
Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach — C’mon, from Bad News Bears! The original! Got a bit of a career renaissance last year, also with Little Children, as a former child molester.
Malin Ackerman as the Silk Spectre — no idea.

  2. Jeffrey Wright was Felix Leiter.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan seems to been on Greys Anatomy.

Matthew Goode…looks like the only thing I have seen him in was Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister.

Malin Ackerman looks like she was in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. I do not remember her.

  3. The director also did a little thing called 300 last year. You may have heard of it …

Actually, the casting per se doesn’t necessarily bother me — I gave up second-guessing casting after Keaton did Batman. I’m just … concerned over how to do justice to the story in a single film, even if they push it to 3 hours or something. Sure, there’s stuff that could be cut out … but unless you make it *just* a murder mystery, without discussing the role of heroes in society, etc., it’s going to run long … and to do that would terribly sort-change the source material.

    I like Terry Gilliam’s idea of a 5-hour mini-series …

  4. Ahhh, yes missed the 300 listing. The Imax thing through me off.

Saddly, I think I would have been happier with a Gilliam or Greengrass version, both of whom would have delved into the whole “Heroes in Society” thang with relish I think.

    Well, here’s hoping. 🙂

  5. As I think of Watchmen and 300, I’m … well, I keep trying to think of where all the Huge Super-Hero Fights will be. There aren’t very many of them in WM (though I can imagine doing some nice bullet-time cam work on Ozymandias). The violence tends to be brief and unglamorous.

  6. The only one I recognize (even after Googling their pics) is Crudup. That’s not necessarily a bad thing (hey, at least there’s a shot at actually having a Watchmen movie!), but the director does make me nervous. I wasn’t nearly so enamored of 300 as everyone else seems to be. If it’s eye-candy they want, then I guess maybe…but I’m not uber-thrilled.

  7. The thing is, Watchman’s not about eye candy and big fights and (except, ironically, for Rorshach) bravado moments. It’s about pain and dreams and finding a place and hubris and ego and what it means to be (super)human.

Now, if Kevin Smith was doing it …

  8. Official word.

Haley — Oscar-nominated this year for “Little Children” –will play Walter Kovacs, a.k.a. Rorschach, who ignores the ban on costumed vigilantes.

Crudup (”Almost Famous”) will play Dr. Manhattan, a superpowered being with godlike powers and temperament.

Akerman (”Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle”) will play Laurie Juspeczyk/the Silk Spectre, who is involved with Dr. Manhattan — but that relationship begins to fall apart as he becomes more disconnected from humanity.

Goode (”Match Point”) will play Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, a costume adventurer who retired voluntarily, disclosed his identity and built a large fortune. He hatches a plot to avert a global catastrophe he believes will be caused by Dr. Manhattan.

Wilson (”Little Children”) will play the Nite-Owl, a crime-figher who uses technical wizardry and has an owl-shaped flying vehicle.

    Morgan (”Grey’s Anatomy”) will play the Comedian, a cigar-chomping, gun-toting vigilante-turned-paramilitary agent.
