So Katherine is caught in the web of comic book reading — not obsessively, but at age 7 she enjoys the ones I buy her.  She gets Teen Titans and Justice League Unlimited and Looney Tunes, and enjoys them all (along with anything else she can read).  She enjoyed reading through some old paperback-sized reprints of early Lee/Ditko Spider-Man comics I have.

She also got turned on to some strip comics this year — Margie offered her some of our Calvin & Hobbes collections and she thought they were the greatest things since sliced bread.

I’m thinking of how I can get her into some of the trade collections I have.  Some of the ones I’m thinking of:

  1. Leave it to Chance
  2. Bone
  3. Herobear and the Kid
  4. Maybe some of the Marvel Essentials?

Any other thoughts? Anything else ongoing?

On a similar note, she’s been very much into animated super-hero adventures — which her Daddy has been more than happy to indulge.  She has a pretty complete collection of the recent WB Superman, Batman, and Justice League series.  Just as much fun to her, though, was the recent release of the 1966 Filmation Superman cartoons — which is what Yours Truly cut his teeth on.  Good stuff.

  1. She recites the beginning narration along with it.

She loves the Superboy video tape I have, too (from the cartoons of that era — even more surreal than the Superman cartoons). Alas, Superboy is wrapped up in litigation at the moment, so I don’t expect those to be released any time soon on DVD.

I’ll think about the Marvel Adventures line. Maybe pick up a couple of singletons and see if she likes them.

  2. The easiest way would be to find a show she likes and get comic-book tie-ins.

Keep in mind they are comics, and she’s seven: she’s old enough to read anything you feel comfortable letting her (as I’m sure you’ll weed out things with adult themes, both with over-graphic violence and sex, and with things, like complex spy stories, that really are just too adult), and the quality isn’t going to matter as much as the quantity. It was about this time that I started reading Spiderman, X-men, Dazzler (!!) and I forget what it was called…uh, something slightly gothic about a noble family all named after jewels? Anyway, anything, from Army comics to horror, that I could get my hands on.

That being said, check out Cardcaptor Sakura. Its sequels get more adult, but the first series is something I think she’d really like. Oooh, or Inu-Yasha. But I’ve just started reading that one, I don’t know where it’ll go…and do check it out first, it gets violent.

    TMNT? The TICK?!?

  3. But we have to love Edlund for moving on to other things, like Buffy and Angel!

Also, on a non-comics related book-reading mode, I can’t wait to share some of my collection with you guys!
