Can you believe Kitten’s starting Second Grade? Me, neither. Pretty darned amazing.
She was a little nervous this morning — both excited and scared, worried a bit that she’s going to have forgotten something important over the summer. I’m not worried …
… except that her desk is smack-dab in the middle of the classroom, maximizing the number of conversations that she can get caught up in.
I can’t believe she’s going back to school already! It’s still summer!
Back in my day, in California, we started after Labor Day (Labor Day was the “last hurrah” vacation weekend). For whatever reason, Colorado seems to be on an earlier schedule.
On the other end, we end in late May, rather in the mid-June I grew up with, so it all balances out, I guess.
Back in the day…with clay tablets and Cuniform.
We always started the week just before Labor day but looking at the BVSD schedule K-5 started last week and the rest started monday.
Most of the reason has been because of the NCLB stupidity and the perception that the school year needed to be longer (something that was just starting when I was in High School) because kids had too many days out of school. So more school days have been added to take care of the problem of kids having too long of a summer vacation.
Well, we had some schools return last week, and my friend who teaches middle school started yesterday, so many schools in CA sart before labor day. I think it has something to do with how many holiday and minimun days schools have now. They have to make up that time somewhere.
Well, that’s true — there’s a lot more in-service days for teachers these days, among other things.
P.S.
I forgot to w00t and Grats the Second Grade girl!
W00t and Grats Katherine!
