Bush on the Gonzalez resignation:
“It’s sad that we live in a time when a talented and honorable person like Alberto Gonzales is impeded from doing important work because his good name was dragged through the mud for political reasons,” Bush said from Waco, Texas, where he boarded Air Force One for a fundraising trip.
Yeah, that “dragging good names through the mud for political reasons” is pretty nasty. Just ask all those “fired ‘for performance reasons'” US Attorneys …
You mised out on listening to Right Wing Radio today…Basically take what George II said there and multiply it.
They are just in a different world.
I just want to know if they intentionaly timed it to still the spotlight from the aniversary of Katrina.
Given that the posited replacement, Chertoff, was a key part of the Katrina recovery effort — if so, it was a very lame attempt.
The analysis I read was basically it was a “while Congress is away” action, laying the groundwork for the battles over executive privilege and homeland security / counter-terrorism efforts to come, battles the Administration clearly realized Gonzalez was more of a liability than an asset in.
It’s also a way to shrug off someone whose support among the GOP and Conservatives was close to nil, allowing them to rally around the flag for the Administration without such an obvious weak spot.
While I have zippo expectation that the White House will do anything remotely collaborative in coming up with a successor, I will be curious to see who they decide upon.
