The character’s genius is that he can be continually reinvented for the times while still retaining a few immutable elements. “Like any great villain, he’s tremendously engaging,” says Paul Dini, who has handled the Joker character for 15 years, first in animation and currently as the writer of Detective Comics. “As with any trickster, even if you hate him, you also like him to some degree.”
