… and I’m not altogether sanguine about the justice system’s ability to fairly administer capital punishment as a general rule, it certainly seems that the fellow in question here seriously deserves the death penalty (even two decades after the penalty was initially imposed).
While I’m not one to generally concur with the President these days …

If we can be sure he committed the crime. This is one where forensic evidence would be more important than the confession.
We’ve had some soldiers do terrible things in this war, can’t help wondering about them. Especially since it turns out some soldiers got in via “military or prison” in the first place.
Well, George finally gets to do the thing he loves most and hasn’t been able to do since he became President and that is a good old fashioned exicution.
Well, there is that. And the level of concern over the administration of justice (military or otherwise) is a reason to not leap to the death penalty. If he is in fact guilty of the crimes committed (and a single AP story is probably not sufficient to establish that), then I think he deserves it, but there are always a lot of “ifs” in these cases.
Of course, there’s the question of whether the death penalty is EVER a viable option. I won’t argue it here, but I personally have some conflicting opinions about that, but my general consensus is, if there’s a serious reason to be conflicted about killing people, well, we probably shouldn’t be killing people, even really nasty ones.
