It’s important to remember these events and I apload your keeping politics out of it. But I’m not so noble . . . .
The GOP have used this tragedy to strip us of our civil rights and tell us that we’re ‘safer.’ Meanwhile they’ve spent almost NO resources on securing loose nukes and curtailing biological and chemical weapons.
Back in the day it was said: “The price of Freedom is blood.” Most people think this refers simply to military losses, but it’s much bigger than that.
A truly free country, as defined in the constitution before it got shredded by the GOP, means that 1) opposing idealogies will react violently and 2) the free country will be particularly vulnerable to those attacks.
Of course the soundbite reply is that I, and anyone like me, is calling for the US to make ourselves vulnerable to attack. That’s an obvious falsehood, but not as easily explainable in a 15 second bite.
The greatest weapon the USA has against terrorism and oppressive governments is to grant our citizens as many social freedoms as possible. Those freedoms are infectious and have won over more enemies than any number of guns or bombs.
Should we throw open our borders and let just anyone in? Nope. But we do need to make it easier for people to become citizens, finish the job and make our remaining territories into States (granting their citizns full rights), restore our civil liberties and make monitoring of foreign threats the responsibility of the CIA ON FOREIGN SOIL. We need to restore the ability of local police to take the lead in investigating local threats . . it’s their job. And we need to make sure that they have to follow procedures, you know, like getting a search warrant, before investigating a potential criminal.
Oops, OK, I’m stepping away from the soapbox now . . .
