I now have yet another reason buy stuff from Amazon.com, to wit, their new crusade against excess packaging and packaging that is nearly impossible to work through.

I think we’ve all experienced the frustration that sometimes occurs when you try to get a new toy or electronics product out of its package,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “It will take many years, but our vision is to offer our entire catalog of products in Frustration-Free Packaging. We’d like to thank Fisher-Price, Mattel, Microsoft and Transcend for working with us in this effort – we truly appreciate it.

That packaging is generally driven by (a) anti-shoplifting measures and (b) consumers wanting to see the “live” toy inside the box, but stores don’t want it to actually fall out if the box. Neither of these apply to stuff people buy from Amazon, which now has the market leverage to do something about it.

And, of course, for Amazon, it reduces shipping costs due to weight and size being reduced.

Very cool.

  1. Good to hear that they are finally making unpacking easier for the customer – and at the same time creating less of a burden on the environment. Let’s hope that other companies will follow that lead.
