Banner pictures

Well, I’ve taken a first stab at the banner picture instructions that Ginny has blazed trail on for the “Amazing Grace” WordPress theme.

Current problems:

  1. The canned images that come with the theme are still popping up first, then my own pictures (stuff from our Flickr account flagged “ddtb”) overlay them.
  2. Pictures are, not unexpectedly, being smooshed to fit the picture frame.

Sorta-kinda-not-good. I’m pretty sure there’s a way to fix #1; #2 may be more of a problem unless I particularly format pictures to the “correct” proportions, which would be annoying.

I’m going to poke around a bit more at the various links Ginny provides to see if I can figure the solution(s) out. If not, my Gentle Readers may need to put up with teh ugly until later on Friday.

  1. Okay, I figured out how I broke things so that #1 was happening.

#2 is more of an issue. Ginny refers to uncropped images as being ideal here, which does cause me some problems because most of my images are, in fact, cropped. If I can only use uncropped images (or those of a certain proportion), I’ll have to create a special set of copies of photos to do this with. Which isn’t the end of the world, but I need to figure it out.

Using these photos, btw, is (in part) my substitute for the “trail of years” photos from the sidebar. I may try to figure out, at some point, how to bring those back (because it was kind of cool, as well as an interesting gimmick), but not right at the moment.

    1. Hrm. Okay, so the default is 1×2 in dimension. Most of my pix, when I crop them, are cropped to 4×6. Hence the moosh.

So, do I need to recrop some photos to 1×2 and keep them in Flickr as special header photos?

(Folds arms, glances at wristwatch, hopes Ginny glances at this some time soon.)

  2. Actually, it’s more like 3×5.

So I’ve created a new tag set, and made copies of some key pics I wanted to use in 3×5. Which is a tough ratio for portraiture (which is what I’m doing here).

And it looks to be working. Yay!

  3. And I’ve set up 33 photos in the “ddtbheader” tag group. Huzzah. Most are of me, most of “younger” me, though Margie and Katherine make an appearance or two.

That should be good until I get tired of this theme.
