Good Migrations

I continue my methodical migration of personal stuff from my old work laptop to my new home laptop.

I’ve gotten City of Heroes installed (first thing I did — and, yes, it looks glorious). More importantly, I have Firefox up and running, my Linear blogging client finally working. I have OpenOffice installed (vs. MS Office) and the Google Talk client. Oh, and a text editor.

I installed Dropbox to make it easier to transfer files between the two machines, which it has (no worries with the free 2Gb limit).

I’m playing with LastPass instead of RoboForm. Lots of buzz from devoted users of the latter over the quality of the former, and LastPass was designed from the ground up as a network-enabled system to allow sharing of passwords; RoboForm has an online version now for syncing between PCs (which is part of what I’m driving at here), but it doesn’t sound quite as flexible. We’ll see how it works.

Some biggies that remain for the migration include:

  • Migrating iTunes (music and libraries). Like to have this done by this weekend, but live in somewhat-deathly-fear of screwing up the library data and losing stats and ratings and the like. I think I have it figured out, but …
  • Migrating over our photo library stuff and Adobe Photoshop Elements. Here I’m more worried about the reinstall.
  • A few other licensed pieces of software (Paintshop Pro, SplashID, SnagIt)
  • Migrating fonts.
  • Migrating all my personal docs.
  • Getting Backblaze set up for backing up on the new machine.

So, so far so good. Liking the new machine, and looking forward to making still more use of it.
