Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- Mormon leader: Religious freedom at risk – Salt Lake Tribune – Stunning. A church exercises its right to speak out and act on societal matters, and not only is that not a matter of oppressing others’ civil rights, but others expressing their societal dispproval of the church are, themselves, being oppressive and discriminatory. Well, duh. Being a church may make you immune (properly) to legal oppression, but societal reaction is another matter. The LDS Church is not like blacks during the civil rights movement — it’s like the white supremacists. And if people think less of them for that, that’s the cost of taking an unpopular stand, rightly or wrongly.
- Proof texting for the death penalty – The dangers of having a “jury of your peers” populated by Texan Bible-thumpers. Jesus wept.
- Get That Vaccine, It’s Going to Be a Bad Flu Year – Get your regular shot. Get your H1N1 shot when it’s available, too. No reason not to, every reason to do so.
- Swine flu vaccine shunned despite availability – health – 13 October 2009 – New Scientist – Great. And the anti-vaccination folks will never take any “credit” for the deaths that will result.
- How Safe is the HPV vaccine? | Information Is Beautiful – A lot safer than not getting it, it appears.
- Official Gmail Blog: New in Labs: Got the wrong Bob? – Brilliant! Running to turn this on …
- Anyone Still Using Friendfeed? – Never used it, but it certainly had a devoted following who seem to have been utterly turned off by the Facebook acquisition.
- Fox Nation now promoting the “Tea Party Express II” – Media Matters – I love the HUGE FOX NATION PROMOTION AND SUPPORT AND MAPPINESS FOR ANTI-GOVERNMENT TEA PARTIES PARADE RALLY EXPRESS THING … and the small headline on the right, “Why Obama Should Drop His Fight Against Fox News.”
- AMC – Blogs – SciFi Scanner – John Scalzi’s SciFi Writing Contest – Some great writing fodder here.
- Limbaugh proudly claims to ‘have spawned’ Glenn Beck. – … to rise up and EAT THE BRAINS OF THE LIVING!
- New Ad Blasts Insurance Companies, Renews Push For Public Option: Greg Sargent
- PolitiFact | Levin claims that other Western countries have lifted their bans – And yet, somehow, American (male) soldiers are deemed less secure in their masculinity. Tell it to the Aussies, who dropped their ban on gay soldiers almost as long ago as some of our newest US recruits have been alive.
- It’s Still A Duck: Court Re-Affirms That First Sale Doctrine Can Apply to “Licensed” Software – Good.
- Round-Up of Reactions to Yesterday’s PATRIOT Vote – There are differences between the Democrats and the Republicans. Just not as many as I’d like.
- Perry’s Saturday Night Massacre Continues – This says it all: “It’s hard to think of something that more directly contradicts the ‘culture of life.'” I hope this cause haunts Perry, Texas, and capital punishment supporters for years.
- Writing Contest – I’ve not gone to any of the Transformers movies … but if they were to actually make this one, I probably would. (Love me my Midsummer.)
- Jacobs Ladder Gif – I have no idea if this is real (my first thought was of “Forbidden Planet”), but it’s pretty cool looking regardless.
- President Obama’s Nobel Prize explained – But wait — she’s angling to come back in a sequel!
