Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- ‘Death Panels’ Hypocrisy: RNC Health Insurance Provider Promotes End-Of-Life Counseling – Hypocrisy has nothing to do with it. They don’t have a principled stance in the first place — it’s all about their winning (and making the other side lose).
- prog21: A Spellchecker Used to Be a Major Feat of Software Engineering
- Teaching the market a lesson – Adapt or die. That’s the ruthless lesson of economics (which is generally good for innovation for the consumer, sometimes not so good for the workers). But book publishers can’t hold back the tide — they need to figure out how to use new technologies, not suppress them. Denial is not a long-term healthy state of mind.
- The “R” word: why we shouldn’t fear health care rationing : White Coat Underground – I concur that transparency — and a transparent appeals system — would allow both the recognition of the rationing already occurring, and the rationing that is part of any provision of a limited good to a seemingly unlimited demand.
- “Going Rogue” Fact Check: Palin’s Book Goes Rogue On Some Facts, AP Says – If a lot of these sound familiar, it’s because the book rehashes a lot of Palin’s (previously-debunked) claims from the ’08 campaign.
- Illinois prison in running to house Gitmo detainees – Prediction: accusations that Obama is favoring Illinois by sparing them from moving any terrorists there will be replaced by accusations that Obama is favoring Illinois by cutting them a big detention center deal.
- Abandon Truth All Ye Who Enter Here… – Yes, it’s telling that Palin’s first public act in the book is to tacitly deny it was partially ghost written. But, then, I guess admitting that she needed some help wouldn’t seem very mavericky.
- Are Clergy’s Rights Being Violated By Prohibiting Same-Sex Marriage? – I don’t think this will actually help — the conservative forces screaming the loudest that churches should get to do anything they want will scream that in this case they shouldn’t — but it’s an interesting approach that might illustrate some of the contraditions (and hypocrisy) in the situation.
- Astronomy Picture of the Day – Cool, a bit of astronomy from close to home — Thanks, Mary.
- Republicans Are Shocked The Public Is Mad At Them For Voting Against Franken’s Anti-Rape Amendment – “So basically, the only lesson they learned is that next time, they have to hide their votes when they decide to screw over women’s rights. That way, they can support their allies in the contracting business and the public will never find out.” Yup. That’s about the size of it.
- G. Gordon Liddy Says ‘I’m Convinced’ That ‘Barack Obama Is A Muslim,’ Gary Bauer Doesn’t Disagree – Why does anyone actually listen to G. Gordon Liddy? I mean, talk about a morally bankrupt nut case …
